Riding along the Hualien and Taitung Coast
The coastal mountain range in the east of Taiwan is about 175 kilometers long, and Taiwan's Provincial Highway 11 on the east side of the mountain range starts from Ji'an Hualien in the north and reaches Taimaliin Taitung in the south, with a total length of about 177 kilometers. There are various coastal terraces, sea-eroded terrains, and strange rocks and scattered along the route. It is the most beautiful by-bicycle sea view route in Taiwan, attracting many bicycle enthusiasts to enjoy the emotion of riding on the edge of the vast Pacific Ocean. The coast is the main feature of this route. It is recommended to ride from south to north and avoid the northeast monsoon season in the winter. In this way, it is convenient to enjoy the scenery all the way north along the coast, and there will be no danger or doubt because of the need to cross the road when enjoying the scenery. This itinerary starts from Taitung Station and enters the Provincial Highway 11 at the southernmost end of the Coastal Mountain Range. On the first day, you travel along the coast to the north and come to Chenggong township, which is famous for its fishing industry, as your accommodation point. Due to the rich fishery brought by the Pacific Kuroshio Current, it has become the most important fishing center on the east coast. When you come here, don't miss the high-quality and cheap seafood here. On the second day, continue to go north along the Provincial Highway 11. On the way, you can turn off to the famous King Kong Avenue (KAKACAWAN Bicycle Path in Jia Zou Bay). If you come in July and August, the yellow rice waves before the rice harvest in the distance is the most exciting scenery here. On the third day, pass the estuary of the Xiuguluan River, which divides the Coastal Mountains into two sections, the north, and the south, and continue north. After crossing the highest point of the Provincial Highway 11 and heading downhill, go around the Hualien Bridge at the northernmost end of the Coastal Mountains and go to Hualien Station to take the bicycle-friendly train to leave, ending this most classic east coast ride.
