Matsu Bicycle Trip

55.60KM
Route Length
Level 3 (suitable for those with long-distance experience)

The Matsu Islands mainly consist of five islands, Nangan, Beigan, Dongju, Xiju, and Dongyin. In the early years, they were battlefields, and they were not actively developed. Most of the original features were preserved. In the early years, the islanders relied mainly on fishing, so most of their settlements were close to the harbor. The Fujian-style old houses are made of local stone, and the architectural tone is harmoniously compatible with the environment, forming a very special ae sthetic feeling. The geology of Nangan and Beigan is mainly composed of granite, and Dongyin is mainly composed of diorite. In addition, it used to be a battlefield, and the roads are not as open as Taiwan's main island, so most of them are steep. However, since there are airports and ports in Nangan and Beigan, and Dongyin also has regular boat trips, it is not difficult to bring bicycles to and fro. In addition, the three islands have special geology and unique cultural features, so they are suitable to visit by riders with climbing skills. Of course, if time permits, the two islands of Dongju and Xiju in Juguang Township are also suitable for inclusion in the Matsu Islands bike journey. This itinerary is a three-day tour. On the first day, we start from Fu'ao Harbor in Nangan or the B&B where we booked to stay. We circle the island in a counterclockwise direction and visit the Mazu statue, Tianhou Temple, Jinsha Village, Iron Fort, Beihai Tunnel, and Dahan Stronghold, 88 Tunnel and other scenic spots. On the second day, take a boat to Baisha Harbor in Beigan, and visit Banli Vil., Tangqi Vil., Houao village, Luoshan Nature Trail, Qiaozi Village, Qinbi Village, Mazu Broadcast Station and other scenic spots in sequence. For riders who love a challenge, they can try the Yuntai Mountain Military Intelligence Building in Nangan, and the Bi Mountain Observation deck in Beigan, which are the highest points of the two islands. On the third day, take a regular boat from Nangan to Dongyin. With the departure of the boat, use one to two days to visit the Andong Tunnel of Dongyin island, Dongyin Lighthouse, Yixiantian Cliff, the Northernmost Frontier of Xiyin island, Sanshan Strongpoint, and other scenic spots. Then take a boat from Dongyin and return directly to the main island of Taiwan, or take a boat to Nangan and a plane or express boat back to Taiwan to complete your Matsu bicycle journey.

Precautions

  1. The roads on the Matsu islands are steep, so in addition to physical exertion, you must pay attention to the safety of steep descents.
  2. The climate of Matsu has four distinct seasons. Due to the strong, cold winds in the winter, heavy fog is prone to appear at the intersection of spring and summer, which not only affects traffic but is also not suitable for cycling; although there are blue tears to watch from April to September. However, due to the steep roads, the riding experience for riders who are not heat-resistant after summer is not good, so the most suitable season to go is autumn.
  3. Flights to Matsu are likely to be suspended or delayed due to the weather. Please make sure to call or confirm on the official website whether the flight will take off as scheduled.
  4. Whether the boat will start sailing will vary according to walrus changes or seasonality. In addition to pre-booking, it is also confirmed by phone or the official website before departure.
  5. You can use the bicycle-friendly train to Keelung to take the Taima Star. However, suppose the departure date is not a holiday because the ferry check-in time is just after getting off work. In that case, it is recommended to enter the station from Banqiao in New Taipei City and Wanhua station in Taipei (both are bicycle-friendly stations), to avoid a large number of off-duty people getting on the train after Taipei Station, which may easily cause the bicycle to be unable to get on the train and affect your itinerary.
  6. The time required to take various means of transportation between the island and Matsu are below for your reference:
  7. Aircraft flight time, Songshan ←→ Nangan, Beigan is about 50 minutes, Taichung ←→ Nangan is about 75 minutes; Taima Star, Keelung ←→ Nangan, Dongyin travel time is about 8~10 hours; North-South Star, The flight time from Taipei Port ←→ Nangan is about 3 hours.
  8. If you are going to Matsu by Taima Star, the order of arriving at Nangan and Dongyin is different on an even or odd day, so in addition to planning the riding order of each island, you need to take it into account, and you also need to keep your time flexibile, so as not to stop the boat due to walruses affecting the itinerary.
  9. Before going to the Matsu islands, it is recommended to book the accommodation first (Matsu National Scenic Area Administration Website), and the flight or ferry tickets between the island and Matsu need to be booked in advance.
  10. Traveling to and from Matsu by boat is a long voyage, so those prone to seasickness are advised to take seasickness medicine.
  11. The Nangan, Beigan, and Juguang Tourist Centers of the Matsu National Scenic Area Management Office provide bicycle borrowing services. For related borrowing methods and precautions, please refer to [(https://www.matsu-nsa.gov.tw/News-Content.aspx? a=6&l=1&nid=1037)](https://www.matsu-nsa.gov.tw/News-Content.aspx? a=6&l=1&nid=1037).
  12. Special attention should be paid to the different bicycle regulations on ferries. Taima Star allows carriage on passenger ships as a whole vehicle; the North-South Star requires bicycles to be packed in a travel bag.
  13. North and South Star Luggage Regulations.
